Tajinaste Rojo: Teide's Three-Metre Red Tower

The first time you see a red tajinaste in flower, you stop. It is not subtle. From a low, silvery rosette of narrow leaves, a single dense column rises, packed with hundreds of small crimson blooms. The spike can reach three metres, taller than a person, and it stands out against the muted tones of the caldera floor like a flame held upright. For a plant that spends most of its life as an unremarkable cluster of grey-green leaves, the transformation is dramatic — and terminal. This is the plant’s only shot at reproduction, and it puts everything into it.

A tower of red on the high ground

Echium wildpretii is endemic to Tenerife and, within the island, it is most strongly associated with the high, open terrain of Las Cañadas and the slopes around Mount Teide. It belongs to the borage family, Boraginaceae, a group that includes forget-me-nots and comfrey, but few of its relatives look anything like this. The plant forms a basal rosette of lance-shaped leaves, each covered in fine silvery hairs that give the whole thing a grey sheen. For several years this rosette sits close to the ground, doing nothing dramatic, building reserves. In the stark volcanic landscape, where black lava and pale pumice dominate, the rosette can be easy to overlook — a low, dusty cluster that blends into the scree.

Then, in its final year, it bolts. A stout, unbranched stem rises from the centre, thickening as it goes, and the upper portion becomes a densely packed inflorescence. The individual flowers are small, tubular, and a deep coral-red that catches the light. They open in succession from the bottom of the spike upwards, so for weeks the tower is a graduated display of buds, open blooms and spent flowers. At full height, the spike can brush three metres, though many are closer to two. The effect is of a single enormous flower, but it is actually a crowd of tiny ones, each with its own moment. A life lived once

The red tajinaste is monocarpic. That word, from the Greek for “single fruit”, means the plant flowers once and then dies. It is a strategy, not a flaw. In the harsh, dry, high-altitude environment of the caldera, building a flowering structure of this size takes resources that cannot be gathered in a single season. So the plant waits. For a variable number of years (the exact span is not well documented) it exists as a rosette, photosynthesising, storing energy in a deep taproot, enduring summer drought and winter frost. Then, when conditions trigger the shift, it sends up the spike, produces seed, and is done.

The trigger for flowering is not fully understood, but it is likely a combination of plant size, temperature cues and perhaps moisture. Once the spike begins to elongate, the plant’s fate is sealed. It will not produce another rosette, and it will not survive the winter after seeding. The dried brown skeleton may stand for months afterwards, a reminder of what was there, before wind and rain knock it down. Walking through the caldera in late summer, you often see these ghosts of the spring display, their seed already scattered, their work complete. When the towers bloom

Flowering happens in late spring and early summer, typically from May into June, sometimes stretching into July if the winter has been cold and wet. The window is not fixed; it shifts year to year with the weather. A warm, dry winter can push flowering earlier, while a cool, damp one can delay it by several weeks. The park does not issue a flowering forecast, and there is no single day when every spike is at its peak. Instead, across the caldera, different plants at different microsites come into flower in a rolling sequence. A south-facing slope may bloom a fortnight before a shaded hollow, and plants at slightly lower elevations often lead those higher up.

If you are planning a visit specifically to see the tajinaste in bloom, late May is a reasonable bet, but it pays to check recent photographs or ask locally. The plant’s moment is brief in the context of its long life: the spike may look good for two or three weeks, after which the lower flowers fade and the upper ones open, so the display changes character. By late June, many spikes are already setting seed, turning brown from the base up. The transformation of the landscape is swift. One week the caldera is dotted with red; the next, the colour has drained and the seed heads are rattling in the wind. Pollinators at work

When the red tajinaste is in flower, it hums. Bees are the primary pollinators, and on a warm morning a tall spike can be covered with them, working the tiny flowers methodically. The plant produces copious nectar, and the red colour is thought to be attractive to bees, though they see red less vividly than we do; the ultraviolet patterns may be the real signal. Other insects also visit, including flies, beetles and occasional butterflies, but bees do the heavy lifting. The sound is a low, steady drone that carries across the still air of the caldera, a sign that the plant’s reproductive machinery is in full swing.

The inflorescence structure, with flowers opening sequentially from bottom to top, means that a single spike offers fresh rewards over an extended period. This is good for the plant, because it increases the chance of cross-pollination, and good for the bees, because it provides a reliable food source in an otherwise sparse landscape. The relationship is tight enough that the flowering of the tajinaste and the activity peak of high-altitude bee populations are broadly synchronised. On a calm morning, you can stand beside a flowering spike and watch the traffic — bees arriving, probing, departing, their bodies dusted with pollen, the whole column alive with movement. Built for altitude

The caldera floor sits above 2,000 metres. The air is thin, the ultraviolet radiation is intense, and water is scarce for much of the year. Winter nights bring frost, and summer days can sear. The red tajinaste’s silvery hairs are not decorative; they are a functional response to these stresses. The dense covering of trichomes reflects a portion of the incoming solar radiation, reducing the heat load on the leaf surface and slowing water loss. The hairs also trap a layer of still air close to the leaf, which helps buffer temperature swings and further reduces transpiration. On a cold morning, the same hairs provide a degree of insulation, holding a thin blanket of warmer air against the tissue.

The rosette form itself is an adaptation. By keeping its leaves low and clustered, the plant minimises exposure to drying winds and creates a microclimate around its growing point. The deep taproot allows it to reach moisture that surface-rooted plants cannot. These are classic high-mountain strategies, seen in alpine plants around the world, but the tajinaste executes them at a scale that feels almost tropical. The contrast between the tough, grey, ground-hugging rosette and the extravagant red tower it eventually produces is one of the plant’s most striking features. It is as if the plant spends years in armour, then suddenly discards it for a brief, brilliant display.

The name and the botanist

The species name, wildpretii, commemorates Hermann Wildpret, a Swiss-born botanist who worked for much of his life in the Canary Islands. In the 19th century, Wildpret was the head gardener at the botanical garden in Puerto de la Cruz, the Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava, and he did much to document and cultivate the islands’ endemic flora. Under his care, the garden became a centre for the study and propagation of Canarian plants, and his name became attached to several species. The plant was named in his honour by the botanist Auguste Le Jolis in the late 1800s. The genus Echium, from the Greek echis, “viper”, refers to the shape of the nutlets, which supposedly resemble a snake’s head — a feature shared with the common viper’s bugloss of European roadsides.

In English, the plant is sometimes called the tower of jewels, a name that captures the dense, gem-like clustering of the flowers. It is grown as an ornamental in gardens well beyond the Canaries, particularly in Mediterranean-climate regions and in the drier parts of Australia and California. There, it is a novelty, a showpiece for a single season. In its home range, it is something more: a defining element of the high-mountain flora, and a plant that shapes the visual character of the national park for a few weeks each year. To see it in the wild is to understand why it earned its name, and why it has become an emblem of Tenerife’s natural heritage.

Where to find them in the park

The red tajinaste is not evenly distributed across Teide National Park. It favours open, sunny sites on well-drained volcanic soils, and it is most abundant in the caldera itself and on the lower flanks of the mountain. The roadsides along the main routes through the park can offer good views without the need for a long walk, but the densest stands are often a little way from the tarmac, on slopes and in the lee of lava flows where grazing pressure is lower and the soil has had time to develop.

Walking any of the trails across the caldera floor in late spring, you are likely to encounter flowering spikes. The plant is conspicuous enough that you do not need to search for it; you will see it from a distance. The protection is not merely bureaucratic; it reflects the plant’s restricted range and the pressure that even small-scale interference can create. The rosettes are easily damaged by trampling, and a single footstep can crush a plant that has spent years building the reserves to flower. Staying on marked paths is the single most effective thing a visitor can do to safeguard the species.

The park’s management also contends with the impact of introduced herbivores. Mouflon, released on Tenerife in 1971 for hunting, graze on native vegetation, and the tajinaste is not immune.
