Teide's Obsidian: Volcanic Glass and the Guanche Tool Trade
What obsidian is
Obsidian is volcanic glass. When silica-rich lava cools too quickly for atoms to arrange into crystals, the melt solidifies as a glass: amorphous, homogeneous, black, and often glossy. The fracture is conchoidal, meaning it breaks in smooth, curved surfaces that radiate from the point of impact. The result is an edge only a few molecules thick, which is why obsidian knives are still used in some surgical procedures today.
Chemically, the obsidian on Teide is related to the phonolite that built the mountain’s cone. The same magma that produced the pale, blocky lava of the summit dome also produced, under different cooling conditions, the dark glass that occurs in some of the younger flows around the park. The difference is entirely one of cooling rate: a slower chill allows crystals to grow; a rapid chill freezes the liquid structure in place.
Where obsidian appears on the mountain
Obsidian is not found everywhere on Teide. It occurs in specific, relatively young volcanic deposits, often in the margins of flows where the lava surface chilled quickly on contact with the air or ground. The glass tends to be brittle and easily shattered, so it weathers into small, angular fragments. Larger pieces are rare.
The flows that produced obsidian are among the most recent eruptions in the Teide-Pico Viejo complex, but the geological record does not always preserve the exact age of a given glass deposit. What matters for the human story is that the material was accessible: within walking distance of the Guanches’ seasonal camps in the high caldera, and of good enough quality to knap. Some of the obsidian in the park is of a deep black with a faint greasy lustre; other pieces show a brownish translucency when held to the light.
The Guanche tool trade: the tabona
The Guanches arrived in Tenerife several centuries before the Spanish conquest, bringing with them a Neolithic technology. They had no metal, no pottery wheel, and no draft animals. Their cutting tools were stone, and the best stone for sharp edges was obsidian.
The Canarian term for a worked flake or blade is tabona. It is a word that survives in the local Spanish dialect, a reminder of the skill that turned a shard of glass into a usable tool. The Guanches used tabonas for:

Obsidian blunts quickly. The edge is keen but fragile; a few cuts and the microscopic chips accumulate, dulling the blade. The Guanches did not bother to resharpen; they simply struck a new flake from a prepared core. That is why the archaeological record is dominated by debris: the by-product of a tool-making process that was fast, profligate, and effective.
The material was valuable enough to be moved around the island. Obsidian from the Teide region has been found in coastal sites, and coastal materials such as shells and volcanic basalt for grinding stones appear in high-altitude contexts. There was a trade, or at least an exchange network, that connected the different ecological zones of Tenerife. The obsidian that came down from the mountain was a reliable currency.
Archaeological traces in the park
The national park is not only a geological landscape; it is also an archaeological one. Flakes, cores, and the waste chips of obsidian knapping have been found at several locations within the caldera and on the lower slopes of the mountain. These are not grand settlements: the Guanches did not live permanently on the high ground. But the debris shows that people came here to make tools, probably on the same trips when they collected pumice or hunted the now-extinct giant lizard (Gallotia goliath).
The archaeological sites are fragile. A single footstep can scatter a surface spread of flakes that has lain undisturbed for centuries. The park authorities protect these areas, and the UNESCO World Heritage listing of 2007 explicitly recognises the cultural heritage alongside the natural values. The obsidian scatters are part of the reason the whole caldera floor is a protected zone.
Protection today
Every piece of obsidian you see on the ground, even the smallest, dullest chip, is protected. It is illegal to collect, remove, or disturb any geological or archaeological material within the national park. The same law that guards the Tajinaste rojo and the Teide violet also guards the flake that might have been the last tool a Guanche hunter discarded.
For the visitor, the rule is simple: look, photograph, leave in place. The glass is fragile, the archaeological context is irreplaceable, and the mountain’s story, both volcanic and human, depends on every fragment staying where it fell.
The Guanche relationship with the mountain
The Guanches did not treat Teide as a quarry alone. The mountain held a central place in their cosmology, known as Echeyde, a name that likely referred to the underworld. Guayota, a malign spirit, was believed to live inside the volcano. The myth told of Achamán, the supreme sky god, defeating Guayota and sealing him within the mountain, with the pale summit cone explained as the plug that holds him there. This sacred geography meant that the high ground carried ritual restrictions. The same people who climbed to collect obsidian and pumice did so within a framework of belief that gave the mountain a power beyond its practical usefulness. The tabonas they carried down were not just tools; they were fragments of a landscape that was both a source of raw material and a dwelling place of spirits.
The edge that endures
Obsidian is a material of contradictions. It forms in fire, yet holds a cutting edge sharper than steel. It is brittle enough to shatter under a careless step, yet durable enough to survive centuries on an open mountainside. The same volcanic process that built Teide also produced the glass that gave the Guanches their finest blades. The mountain provided both the raw material and the mythic framework within which it was used. The tabonas are gone now, scattered or buried, but the obsidian remains where it fell, waiting for the next rain to wash the dust from its surface.
